20 September 2005
On the eve of the International Day of Peace 2005, nearly two hundred students, teachers, administrators and guests "planted" their pinwheels at the centrally-located rotunda in the school campus. The project was led by the Humanities Department of Miriam College in close collaboration with the school's Center for Peace Education and the Art teachers from the Elementary and High School units.
The Art classes of the Elementary, High School and College prepared the pinwheels. It is no wonder then that they were so colorful and beautiful, a collective art exhibit indeed, aside from being a public statement about the school community's goal of promoting peace. Those who came to the activity expressed their appreciation for this innovative project for peace.
The "planting" of the Pinwheels for Peace was part of a week-long celebration of the International Day of Peace that the Center for Peace Education has spearheaded since 1998. The activities for said Peace Week included a Forum, Exhibit and Mini-program, a Peace Booth at a popular city park and a Film-showing. However, this was the first time that the Pinwheels for Peace activity was undertaken. The theme of the week was "Celebrating 60 Years of Peace Building" in commemoration of the start of the United Nations, Pax Christi International and the anti-nuclear movement as a result of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings.
